Obituary for Cornelius M. Ladeau

Cornelius M. Ladeau
Cornelius 'Neal' M. Ladeau
Enfield, CT
God called home one of his very best on Thursday, June 25, 2015. He passed just two days after his 64th Wedding Anniversary. Neal was born on October 22, 1927 in Bristol, VT; the 11th child of Louisa (Clark) and William Ladeau.
Neal was a proud Navy Veteran of WWII. Upon Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy on August 2, 1946, Neal returned home to Bristol, VT where he worked as a logger. At that time Neal met the love of his life, Marcella M. Tatro. They were married on June 23, 1951 in Bristol, VT. He loved her tremendously and taught his children and grandchild to honor her as he did.
Shortly after marriage, Neal and Marcella moved to New York where he worked as a Caretaker for a Boarding School; while Marcella served as the cook. From there they made their way to CT, first Windsor Locks and East Windsor and then settling in Enfield in 1958 to raise their family. Neal could aptly be described as a workhorse. He owned and operated Stateline Esso on Enfield St. (Rt 5) in Enfield for several years in the early 1960's. He enjoyed a long and happy tenure as a mechanic and jack-of-all trades at Southern Auto Auction in East Windsor, CT; in the employ of a man he respected greatly, Larry Tribble. When not at the Auction, Neal could invariably be found raking, shoveling, building, tearing down repairing or in some other fashion, working on a project. Amazingly, the immense amount of work Neal performed over his lifetime was largely fueled by Twinkies, Pall Malls and Coca Cola; in the end, sips of Coca-Cola were the only from of sustenance still of interest to him. In the rare times that Neal wasn't hard at work, he would enjoy watching one of his two favorite sports teams: the Bruins and the Red Sox. After retirement, Neal and Marcella traveled the country in their motor home and spent many seasons at campgrounds in the Berkshires. Neal was a member of Amvets Post 18, Enfield and a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, Washington Irving Council #50, Enfield.
The only thing that exceeded Neal's love for labor was his love for family. He dedicated his life to ensuring that his wife, children, grandchild and great grandchildren lived far better than he did. We are all grateful to be the beneficiaries of his selflessness, to have learned so much from a life well-lived, and to know what it was to be loved and cared for by Neal Ladeau. We love and miss you always, honey – daddy – grandpa – great grandpa.
In addition to his parents Neal was predeceased by seven sisters and four brothers and many other relatives. Neal is survived by his angel on earth, his wife, Marcella; his loving daughter Denise and her husband Frank Fleming of Suffield; his devoted son Michael Ladeau and his fiancé, Sandy Saucier, of Enfield; his best friend and grandson, Joshua Ladeau and his wife Amanda of CT along with his much loved great grandson, Dillon and great granddaughter, Madeline. Neal also leaves his Sister-in-law, Joan Barrows of Bristol, VT and her son Mark. Neal's grand pets held a big place in his heart; especially his loyal grandpup Samantha, grandcat Callie and Great grandpup Peanut.
The Ladeau family wishes to thank the many caregivers who showed such kindness and care for Neal throughout the last several months, especially his Chemo Angel, Angelique from Dr. Thumar's office, Nurses Jessie and Alicia from Johnson Memorial 2nd floor, Rick from Respiratory Therapy at Johnson Memorial, Dr. Lisa Gilbert of the Northampton, VA and Drs. Thumar and Glaubiger and their staffs and Enfield Community Ambulance and Enfield Police Department.
There were no calling hours, per Neal's request. A private family service will be held at a later date. Donations in Neal's honor may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
